Zagros
includes a wide and long chain of mountains which begins
form the northwest of Iran and continues to the south. The width of Zagros sometimes reaches over 300 kilometers.
Climate, flora and fauna of this region
is partially related to the Mediterranean region
and in fact, the Zagros Range represents the easternmost limits of the Mediterranean area.
Many of the Mountains in Zagros are over 4000 meters high.
This high altitudes block the way of clouds while going towards the east, and cause rainfalls in the western slopes. Therefore, the western slopes of Zagros consist of woodlands whereas the eastern slopes are mostly dispersed grasslands. The
altitude variance and geographical latitude has created a rich floral diversity all through the region. The woodlands of Juniperus Spp and Querqusia
Persicus, Pistacia and Amygdalus are spread all over the area, and
in the spring, very beautiful wild flowers cover the mountainous
slopes.

The combination of jungles and mountains, and roaring rivers creates a beautiful scenery which in the meantime is a very proper habitat for many animals. Brown bear, panther, wild sheep, ibex, fox, hyena, wild cats, otter and … live in different areas of Zagros.
The beautiful Persian squirrel, Sciurus Anomalous, which is endemic to Iran, is a common species in the Quercus forests of Zagros. Many birds of prey, perching and singing birds, and colorful butterflies, among which over 10 species are
endemic to Iran, can be commonly seen everywhere.
There are historical monuments
belonging to over 2500 years ago around this mountain range, including the Persepolis, the Pasargades, the
Buried Ancient city, Zarathustran's temples, etc.
The races of people living in Zagros are also diverse: Kurds, Lors, Qashqa'i and Bakhtiari nomads have chosen this part of the country for living. |
