With
their highly intense biodiversity, wetlands deserve to be
called the masterpieces of creation. Of the most important
wetlands in Iran is “Anzali” Wetland in Gilan, a unique
and virgin reservoirs for thousands of migratory
birds. Many amphibians,
reptiles and fish also inhibit this
wetland. Located on the migration route of the birds, it is
a fine oviposition site for many bird species such as
herons, cormorants, terns and eagles.
The “Shadegan”
wetland in Khuzestan is another major wetland in Iran,
where the Marbled Teal ovipositors. “Hamoon”Lake and
Wetland in Sistan & Baluchestan is another
important place with special ecosystem. Many ducks, Pochards,
Pelicans, Swans and Geese live in this biotope. In
case of lakes, Iran is a very rich country. Various lakes such as “Urmieh”,
“Ghoorigol”, “Tashk” and “Bakhtegan” are of the most important ones.
Urmieh Lake in Azerbaijan is a national park and is a
protected region by the Iranian Department of Environment. The main purpose for protecting this area is to
preserve it’s ecosystem, it’s salty water and it’s
wildlife biotopes including that of fish and migratory
birds. The beautiful islands, only a part of the natural
value of this lake, are natural sceneries and the breeding
places for flamingos. Large colonies of these interesting
birds can be seen here every year. Beside Flamingo, there
live white Pelican, Shelduck, Gray Leg Goose, Mallard, Pochard, and White-headed duck.
The Ghoorigol Lake (Tabriz) is also located in the same geographical district,
and one
of its main characteristics is that it is a very proper and
important habitat
for various birds, specially the
White-headed duck. “Tashk”
and “Bakhtegan” Lake, located in Fars Province (south
Iran), are of the largest and most-watered lakes of Iran.
The mountainous regions around this lake and the islands
inside it create a very beautiful scene. The “Kor”
River, the only large river in the province, does not flow
into the open sea but flows into this lake. Large numbers of
pelicans can be observed, at the place the sea and this lake meet,
hunting fish in groups. Flamingo, Ruddy Shelducks, coots and
many birds of pray can also be observed in this biotope.
Mammals in the lake shores include wildcats, Jackals, foxes,
and hyenas. |
